30 Best Things to Do in NYC This Fall + Easy Fall Day Trips (2026)

Fall in New York might be my favorite time of year.

The weather finally starts cooling down, the leaves change, pumpkin season arrives, and suddenly every weekend feels like an excuse to get out of the house.

And you definitely don’t have to spend the entire season in Manhattan.

Some of my favorite fall experiences are actually just outside NYC – apple picking in the Hudson Valley, taking Metro-North along the Hudson River, spending a day in Beacon or Cold Spring, or turning a day trip into a cozy weekend getaway.

So I put everything together in one place.

Here are 30 things to do in NYC and around New York this fall, including fall foliage, pumpkin patches, apple picking, Halloween activities, easy day trips and weekend getaways.

I’ve also included how to get there and where to stay when I think it’s worth making a weekend out of it.

Save this guide. Fall in New York always goes by faster than you think. 🍂

THINGS TO DO IN NYC THIS FALL

1. See the Fall Foliage in Central Park

📍 Manhattan
💰 Free
🍂 Best time: Usually late October into November

You really don’t have to leave NYC to see beautiful fall colors.

Make an afternoon of it and walk:

The Mall → Bethesda Terrace → Bow Bridge → The Ramble → Belvedere Castle

Bring coffee, wear a cute fall outfit and just wander.

One important tip: don’t panic if Central Park is still looking green while you’re seeing orange leaves all over Instagram from Upstate New York. NYC usually changes later.

2. Visit The Met Cloisters + Fort Tryon Park

📍 Upper Manhattan
🚇 Take the A train to 190th Street

This might be one of my favorite fall solo-date ideas in NYC.

Start at The Met Cloisters, then walk around Fort Tryon Park and enjoy the views over the Hudson River.

You get medieval architecture, gardens, art and fall foliage without ever leaving Manhattan.

3. Spend a Fall Day at New York Botanical Garden

📍 Bronx
🚆 Metro-North from Grand Central to Botanical Garden

If you want fall foliage without going Upstate, head to the Bronx.

NYBG’s grounds include the 50-acre Thain Family Forest, which is an old-growth forest right in New York City.

This would also make such a cute fall date.

4. Pick a Pumpkin at Queens County Farm Museum

📍 73-50 Little Neck Parkway, Queens

🎃 2026 Pumpkin Patch: October 1–31
💰 Admission to the pumpkin patch is free; pumpkins are priced by size.

Yes, there is an actual pumpkin patch in NYC.

Queens County Farm Museum sits on 47 acres, so this is probably one of the easiest ways to get the fall-farm feeling without renting a car and driving Upstate.

During October 2026, the pumpkin patch is scheduled for 1–5 PM on weekdays and 10 AM–5 PM on weekends, with special admission rules on certain event dates.

5. Get Lost in the Amazing Maize Maze

📍 Queens County Farm Museum

While you’re at Queens Farm, add the Amazing Maize Maze.

It’s a three-acre corn maze and one of those activities that makes you forget you’re still in New York City.

Do the maze + pumpkin patch together and make a full fall afternoon out of it.

6. See Brooklyn Botanic Garden in Fall

📍 Brooklyn
🚇 2/3 train to Eastern Parkway–Brooklyn Museum

Brooklyn Botanic Garden is beautiful once the colors start changing.

Afterward, walk through Prospect Park or grab brunch nearby.

This is another easy fall day when you don’t want to leave the city.

7. Have a Fall Picnic on Governors Island

📍 Governors Island
⛴️ Ferry from Lower Manhattan

Before it gets TOO cold, take the ferry over to Governors Island.

Walk up The Hills for skyline views, bring something to eat or turn the whole thing into a spa day.

It’s an easy little escape without actually leaving NYC.

8. Experience the Village Halloween Parade

📍 Greenwich Village
📅 October 31

If you’ve never experienced Halloween in Greenwich Village, add it to your NYC bucket list.

Expect costumes, huge puppets, performers and thousands of people taking over the Village.

And if you’re going to participate rather than just watch, COME DRESSED UP.

9. Go to the New York Film Festival

📍 Lincoln Center + select NYC venues
📅 September 25–October 12, 2026

Not every fall activity needs to involve a pumpkin.

The 64th New York Film Festival runs from September 25 through October 12 this year.

This is especially good for a rainy fall day, date night or solo date.

10. Have a High Line Fall Date

📍 Manhattan
💰 Free

Start around the Meatpacking District, walk the High Line toward Hudson Yards, grab a seasonal drink and finish with dinner.

Simple. Cute. And you don’t need an entire itinerary.

APPLE PICKING + PUMPKIN PATCHES NEAR NYC

11. Harvest Moon Farm & Orchard

📍 North Salem, NY
🚗 Best by car
⏱️ Approximately 1–1½ hours from NYC

If your fall isn’t complete without apple picking and cider donuts, put North Salem on your list.

Make it a girls’ day, date or group trip.

12. Outhouse Orchards

📍 North Salem, NY
🚗 Best by car

Since you’re already going to North Salem, you can easily build a full fall itinerary around the area rather than driving up just for one orchard.

Think apples, pumpkins, cider donuts and LOTS of fall pictures.

13. Masker Orchards + Warwick

📍 Warwick, NY
🚗 Approximately 1½ hours from NYC

Don’t just drive to Warwick, pick apples and immediately come home.

Make it a DAY.

Apple picking → lunch → explore Warwick → cider/wine → dinner.

This is one of my favorite formats for a girls’ fall day.

14. Barton Orchards

📍 Poughquag, NY
🚗 Approximately 1½–2 hours from NYC

Barton is another option if you want more than just apple picking.

For fall 2026, seasonal events include activities such as the corn maze, hayrides, entertainment and other harvest festivities.

Check the current calendar before going because individual activities and admission vary by date.

15. Have a North Fork Farm Day

📍 Long Island
🚗 Around 2 hours depending on traffic

Head toward Mattituck and make a day of the North Fork.

Farm → pumpkin/apple stop → lunch → Greenport → dinner.

And if you don’t feel like driving all the way home afterward…

Stay the night.

More on that below.

EASY FALL DAY TRIPS FROM NYC

16. Sleepy Hollow + Tarrytown

📍 Westchester County
🚆 Metro-North from Grand Central
⏱️ Around 40 minutes

If there is ONE time to visit Sleepy Hollow, it’s October.

Come for the spooky history, Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, historic sites and Halloween atmosphere, then spend some time exploring neighboring Tarrytown.

And yes, you can do this without a car.

17. See The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze

📍 Van Cortlandt Manor, Croton-on-Hudson
📅 September 18–November 8, 2026

This is one of those New York fall experiences you should do at least once.

More than 7,000 illuminated jack-o’-lanterns are incorporated into huge themed displays throughout the property.

For 2026, tickets start at $24 for standard timed entry.

IMPORTANT: Advance tickets are required. Tickets aren’t sold on-site.

🚆 You can take Metro-North from Grand Central toward Croton-Harmon and continue to the attraction from there.

18. Spend a Fall Day in Cold Spring

📍 Putnam County
🚆 Metro-North Hudson Line
⏱️ Around 1 hour 15 minutes

Cold Spring gets associated with hiking, but you absolutely do NOT need to hike to enjoy it.

My version:

Coffee → Main Street → antique shops → lunch → Hudson River waterfront → drinks/dinner → train home.

And the Hudson Line train ride is part of the experience during foliage season.

19. Take the Train to Beacon

📍 Dutchess County
🚆 Metro-North Hudson Line
⏱️ Around 1 hour 25 minutes

Beacon is one of my favorite easy NYC escapes because you don’t need a car.

Start at Dia Beacon, then head toward Main Street for restaurants, cafés and shopping.

If you’re doing this during peak foliage, try to get a window seat on the Hudson side of the train.

20. Visit Storm King Art Center

📍 New Windsor, NY
🚗 Easiest by car

Imagine enormous outdoor sculptures surrounded by fall foliage.

That’s basically your Storm King day.

It’s especially beautiful during fall and makes a great date or girls’ trip.

Reserve ahead during busy fall weekends.

21. Spend the Day at Bear Mountain

📍 Hudson Valley
🚗 Approximately 1–1½ hours from NYC

And no, you don’t have to spend the day hiking.

Come for the lake, foliage, scenic drive and fall atmosphere.

Pack snacks, stop somewhere for lunch and turn the drive itself into part of the day.

22. Plan the Ultimate Warwick Fall Day

📍 Warwick, NY
🚗 Approximately 1½ hours

Here’s the itinerary:

🍎 Apple picking
🍩 Cider donuts
☕ Warwick village
🍽️ Lunch
🍷 Cider/wine
🎃 Pumpkin stop
🚗 NYC

Save this one for a group day.

23. Take Amtrak to Hudson

📍 Hudson, NY
🚆 Amtrak from Moynihan Train Hall
⏱️ Around 2 hours

Hudson is another destination where you really don’t need a car for the main town.

Spend the day wandering Warren Street, shopping, eating and having drinks.

You can absolutely come home the same evening.

BUT…

I’d stay overnight.

FALL WEEKEND GETAWAYS FROM NYC

24. Spend a Weekend in Hudson

If you’re already taking the train to Hudson, give yourself more time.

Spend day one around Warren Street and day two exploring more of the surrounding Hudson Valley.

WHERE TO STAY

The Amelia — if you want something stylish and romantic.

Wm. Farmer & Sons — another character-filled option close to the action.

🚆 This is one of my favorite options if you want a fall getaway without dealing with a car.

25. Book a Cozy Catskills Weekend

🚗 Approximately 2–3 hours from NYC

I don’t need every Catskills weekend to turn into a hiking expedition 😂.

My ideal version:

Scenic drive → beautiful hotel → long dinner → wine → fireplace → sleep → slow breakfast → explore a cute town → NYC.

WHERE TO STAY

Urban Cowboy Lodge

or

Scribners Retreat | Sleeps 6 | Huge Patio/Jacuzzi

This is the fall weekend for doing absolutely the least while still feeling like you went somewhere.

26. Stay at Mohonk Mountain House

📍 New Paltz, NY
🚗 Approximately 2 hours from NYC

If you’re looking for a splurge, let the HOTEL be the destination.

Minnewaska Lodge has the unmatched view of surrounding fall scenery all in one place.

This would be especially good for a birthday, anniversary or romantic fall weekend.

27. Spend a Weekend in New Paltz

📍 Ulster County
🚗 Approximately 1½–2 hours

You don’t necessarily have to stay at Mohonk to visit the New Paltz area.

Use New Paltz as your base and explore orchards, wineries, restaurants and the surrounding Hudson Valley.

If you love scenic drives, this is a good one.

28. Do the North Fork in Fall

📍 Long Island

Everyone thinks of the North Fork as a summer destination, but fall is such a good time to go.

Do the farms, seasonal produce, restaurants and Greenport without peak summer energy.

WHERE TO STAY

Sound View Greenport

or

The Menhaden

Stay overnight so nobody has to worry about rushing home.

29. Take a Fall Road Trip to the Berkshires

📍 Massachusetts
🚗 Approximately 3 hours from NYC

If you have a full weekend, go a little farther.

The Berkshires give you charming towns, museums, spas, scenic drives and gorgeous fall scenery.

WHERE TO STAY

Look at Berkshires Untold for a stylish stay.

For a bigger wellness splurge, look at The Cornell Inn, Lenox & The Berkshires

Give yourself at least two nights.

30. Go to Lake Placid + the Adirondacks

📍 Upstate New York
🚗 Approximately 5 hours from NYC

This isn’t a day trip.

Make it a proper two- or three-night fall getaway.

The Adirondacks usually begin changing before NYC, so this is something I’d plan earlier in the season.

Think scenic drives, dramatic mountain views, Lake Placid village, cozy dinners and slow mornings.

Before booking specifically for foliage, check New York State’s current fall foliage report because peak color changes every year.

DON’T HAVE A CAR? START HERE.

You can still have an amazing New York fall.

My picks are:

Central Park
The Met Cloisters + Fort Tryon Park
New York Botanical Garden
Governors Island
Sleepy Hollow/Tarrytown
Cold Spring
Beacon
Hudson

Metro-North and Amtrak can do a LOT of the work for you.

WHEN IS PEAK FALL FOLIAGE IN NEW YORK?

This is probably the biggest mistake people make when planning fall in New York.

The entire state does not peak at the same time.

Generally, color begins farther north and at higher elevations before moving south toward the Hudson Valley and NYC.

That means you could see gorgeous foliage Upstate while Central Park is still mostly green.

Instead of booking based solely on what happened last year, check the I LOVE NY Fall Foliage Report before your trip. The state updates foliage conditions throughout the season.

MY PERFECT FALL WEEKEND FROM NYC

If you only have Saturday and Sunday and don’t want to overthink it:

Saturday: Apple picking + cider donuts + Warwick

Sunday: Sleep in → brunch → Central Park foliage walk → cozy dinner in NYC.

Easy.
