Looking for a fall day trip from NYC without renting a car? Here’s how I spent a beautiful autumn day exploring Putnam County, walking the scenic Putnam Trailway, enjoying fall foliage, discovering local history and finding delicious places to eat.

This time, I headed to Putnam County, New York, for a fall day trip that involved beautiful walking trails, colorful trees, peaceful reservoir views and a little small-town exploring.
And the best part? I did the entire trip without a car!

Here’s exactly how I did it, including how to get there, what to see, where to eat and how to get back to NYC.
1. Getting From NYC to Brewster by Train
My adventure started at Grand Central Terminal, where I boarded Metro-North’s Harlem Line to Brewster.
- Departure: Grand Central Terminal, NYC
- Train: Metro-North Harlem Line
- Travel time: 1 hour, 28 minutes
No driving, no traffic, and I got to enjoy the scenery along the way.
Once I arrived in Brewster, I headed toward the Putnam Trailway entrance to begin my walk.
Travel tip: Check the MTA TrainTime app for current train schedules before your trip. From Brewster station, follow the local walking directions toward the trail access near Route 6. Some connecting streets have vehicle traffic, so pay attention to pedestrian crossings.

2. Walking the Putnam Trailway: One of the Best Fall Trails Near NYC
If you enjoy long walks, scenic bike rides or outdoor running, you need to know about the Putnam Trailway.
This paved trail follows a former railroad corridor through Putnam County and is part of New York’s Empire State Trail system.
The Putnam Trailway stretches approximately 12 miles, connecting Brewster, Carmel, and Mahopac.
I chose to walk from the Brewster area toward Carmel Hamlet.

What makes this trail special is how peaceful it feels. You’re surrounded by trees, wooded paths and beautiful views, especially during fall when the leaves start changing colors.
The trail is suitable for:
- Scenic fall walks and solo outdoor dates
- Running clubs looking for a new route
- Cycling and weekend bike adventures
- Friends planning an active day trip from NYC
You don’t have to complete the entire trail to enjoy it. Pick a section based on your fitness level and how much time you have.
3. Middle Branch Reservoir: My Favorite Scenic Stop
One of the highlights of my walk was Middle Branch Reservoir.

Imagine walking along a peaceful trail and suddenly coming across beautiful water views surrounded by autumn trees.
This is exactly the kind of scenery I was hoping to find!
The reservoir is a great place to slow down, enjoy the fresh air and capture some beautiful fall photographs.
If you’re visiting during autumn, allow extra time here because the changing leaves and water reflections make the scenery even more beautiful.
4. Exploring Carmel Hamlet and Lake Gleneida
After walking the Trailway, I continued toward Carmel Hamlet, a charming community in Putnam County.
One of the first places worth exploring is Lake Gleneida, a scenic lake right in the heart of Carmel.

The lake is surrounded by trees and makes a lovely stop for a relaxing walk, especially during fall.
While exploring, I also checked out two local landmarks.
The Row of Honor

Along Lake Gleneida, you’ll find the Row of Honor, a display of American flags honoring Putnam County residents who served in the United States Armed Forces.
The flags are typically displayed from Memorial Day through Veterans Day weekend.
It’s a meaningful tribute and a beautiful part of the lakefront.
Sybil Ludington Monument

Another interesting stop is the Sybil Ludington Monument.
Sybil Ludington is remembered for her legendary horseback ride during the American Revolutionary War, when she reportedly helped alert local militia members to a British attack in 1777.
If you enjoy discovering local history while traveling, this is worth adding to your Carmel itinerary.
5. Lunch at George’s Place in Carmel
After spending the morning walking and exploring, I was definitely ready for lunch!
I stopped at George’s Place, a local restaurant in Carmel Hamlet.

One of my favorite things about visiting smaller towns is checking out local restaurants instead of sticking to familiar chains.
It’s a great way to experience a destination beyond its main attractions.
If you’re following my route, Carmel Hamlet is a convenient place to take a lunch break before continuing your afternoon exploring.
6. Don’t Leave Without Trying the Cider Mill Ice Cream at Scoops N More!
Now, this is one stop I absolutely recommend!
Before leaving Carmel, I visited Scoops N More to try their cider mill ice cream.

And let me tell you, it was delicious!
It was such a fun way to finish a fall day trip, and I would absolutely recommend trying it if it’s available when you visit.
Location: 90 Gleneida Avenue, Carmel, NY 10512

The shop serves a variety of ice cream flavors, so there’s something for everyone. Check for seasonal specials before visiting.
7. How I Got Back to NYC Without a Car
One of the biggest questions when planning a car-free day trip is figuring out how to get home.

Since Carmel Hamlet doesn’t have its own Metro-North station, I arranged a short Uber ride back to Brewster.
My Uber ride took approximately 11 minutes.
From Brewster, I boarded Metro-North’s Harlem Line back to Grand Central Terminal.
It was an easy way to complete the trip without needing to walk all the way back along the trail.
